Jenkins man charged in shooting after argument

A Jenkins man was arrested last week after he allegedly shot another man in the chest.

Kentucky State Police Post 9 in Pikeville received a call at 7:31 p.m. on January 5 that William Benjamin Mullins, 42, had been shot. Police said Mullins left the shooting scene in his vehicle and was involved in an automobile accident on Elkhorn Creek Road in the Shelby Gap area of Pike County.

Police said they learned later that Mullins had been involved in a dispute with Denton Houston, 64, who shot Mullins in the chest.

WYMT-TV in Hazard reported that state police detectives are not sure what Mullins and Houston were arguing about, but believe the men had agreed to meet at the intersection of Highways 805 and 197 for a gunfight to settle the argument.

Houston was arrested and charged with first-degree assault and taken to the Pike County Detention Center.

Mullins was taken to Pikeville Medical Center and later flown to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.
