Jenkins man helps name mascot for hoops team

A Jenkins man is the winner of several items, including two season tickets, for helping name the mascot for the East Kentucky Miners professional basketball team.

Jason Beverly of Jenkins and Terry Young of Pikeville shared the winning entry of “Hard Hat Harry” as the name of the canary mascot for the Pikeville-based Continental Basketball Association expansion team.

Beverly and Young will each receive two season tickets, an autographed team ball, and a picture with the mascot. They were also recognized before the tip-off of Sunday’s home opener versus the Pittsburgh Xplosion at the East Kentucky Expo Center.

Canaries were once used in coal mining to warn miners of the presence of methane gas underground. If the bird died, miners knew to leave the mine.

The Miners will play 24 home games inside the East Kentucky Expo Center during the 2007-08 season. East Kentucky is one of four expansion teams in the CBA (Continental Basketball Association).
