Jenkins takes two

The Jenkins Lady Cavaliers softball team took advantage of good pitching and solid defense to shut out visiting Shelby Valley, 3- 0, on May 7.

Senior pitcher Rachel Thacker led the way for the Lady Cavs, blanking the Lady Wildcats while allowing just one hit.

Jenkins scored early by picking up a run in the bottom of the first inning on a leadoff single by right fielder Sarah Belcher, a single by catcher Hillary Brashear, and a sacrifice fly to center field by second baseman Brooke Webb.

The Lady Cavs added a run in the fourth when center fielder Ali Goff reached on an error, stole second and scored on a double by designated hitter Sierra Kiser.

The Lady Cavs notched an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Walker drew a walk, stole second and third, and came home on Webb’s second sacrifice fly of the game.

Lady Cavs 9

Hazard 3

Jenkins hosted the Hazard Lady Bulldogs on May 5 in a match-up played on a wet and sloppy field caused by heavy rains.

The Lady Cavs scored nine runs on 13 hits and took advantage of another strong effort by senior pitcher to Rachel Thacker.

Thacker gave up only one hit with two walks while allowing no earned runs and striking out 10 Lady Bulldog batters to claim a 9- 3 victory.

Four errors by Jenkins in the top of the second inning allowed Hazard to score an unearned run to cut the margin to 2-1. The Lady Cavs scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to stretch the lead to 5-1.
