Jenkins to host girls’ tourney Harlan County 54 Letcher Central 36



The girls’ 53rd District Tournament will be hosted by Jenkins High School and begins next week. The Knott Central Lady Patriots, 19-7 overall and 9-0 in district play, will be the top seed and will play the winner of the opening round matchup between fourth seed Letcher Central, 8-18 overall and 3-6 in district play, and winless

Cordia.

Second seed Jenkins, 12-12 overall and 3-3 in district play, will play third seed June Buchanan, 10-8 and 4-4, will meet in a semifinal matchup.

The girls’ 14th Region Tournament will be hosted this year by Powell County High School.

The Harlan County Lady Black Bears expanded a 15-7 lead after the opening quarter to 27-14 at the half and then coasted for the easy 54-36 win over the visiting Letcher Central Lady Cougars Feb. 11.

Kayla Gross’s game-high 18 points led 19-7 Harlan County. Blair Green chipped in with 13 points.

Destiny Hall’s team-high 13 points led 7-18 LCCHS. Shelby Hall scored 12 points. Paige Caudill added five points and Cameron Kincer three. Samantha Tubbs finished with two points and Emma Maggard scored one point.

LCCHS made 6/13 from the free throw line and 14/37 (38 percent) from the floor.

Knott Central 60 Letcher Central 35

The Knott Central Lady Patriots broke open a close game in the first half and pulled away for an easy 60-35 victory over visiting Letcher Central Feb. 10. With the victory, the Lady Patriots remained unbeaten at 9-0 in district play to easily claim the regular season district championship and the district tournament top seed.

Knott Central trailed 8-6 after the first quarter but then moved ahead in the second quarter and led 24- 16 at the half. Cold shooting Letcher Central scored just four points in the third quarter and trailed 48-20 heading into the final quarter.

Stacy Stamper’s teamhigh 14 points led 19-7 Knott Central. Hannah Hollifield, Fallon Slone, Jada Higgins and Kamryn Thornsberry all finished with eight points each.

Junior guard Shelby Hall led 7-18 LCCHS with a game-high 19 points. Samantha Tubbs and Alyssa Adams finished with five points each. Alyssa Franklin chipped in with three points and Emma Maggard with two. Destiny Hall finished with one point. LCCHS made 10/39 field goal attempts for 27 percent. The Lady Cougars converted 15/20 from the charity line.

Letcher Central 64 Hazard 56

The visiting Letcher Central Lady Cougars, in a rare occurrence, placed four players in double figure scoring in winning 64-56 at Hazard on Feb. 4.

LCCHS led early, 17-12 after the opening quarter, but trailed 26-23 at the half.

The Lady Cougars began to take control in the second half and led 44-40 at the end of the third quarter and then pulled away in the final quarter.

Haley Caudill’s gamehigh 28 points led 14-9 Hazard. Colby Johnson finished with 10 points.

Shelby Hall’s 23 points led 7-15 LCCHS. Paige Caudill scored 16 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Samantha Tubbs added 13 points and eight rebounds. Alyssa Adams finished with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Cameron Kincer chipped in with two points.

LCCHS was 24/30 from the charity line with Shelby Hall converting 13/16.
