The Jenkins Lady Cavaliers picked up their 19th win over a tough Perry County Central team last week. Both teams had a slow start. In the top of the fourth, PCC’s Evans reached base on a fielding error, moved to second on a fielder’s choice and to third on a single, and scored on a passed ball.
Jenkins answered in the bottom half. With two outs, Whitney Creech tripled to left and backto back doubles from Mercedes Boggs and Caitlynn Estevez gave them a 2-1 lead.
In the seventh inning and down by one run, PCC’s lead off batter was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a throwing error and scored on a fielding error to tie it up and go into extra innings.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Makayla Seals reached base on a walk, Melissa Bartley got on with an error, and both moved over on a wild pitch. Lexi Stambaugh then singled to left to drive in Seals for the winning run at 3-2.
PCC’s Shelby Sheffield gave up 3 runs on 6 hits with 12 strikeouts in the loss. Caitlynn Estevez got the win with 9 hits, 2 unearned runs and 6 strikeouts.
On May 6, the Lady Cavaliers traveled to Harlan County to take on the Lady Black Bears.
The Lady Cavs jumped on Harlan early in the first inning as Lexi Stambaugh hit a single and scored on a triple from Whitney Creech, who then scored on a fielding error. Mercedes Boggs reached base on that same error and moved to second on a single from Caitlynn Estevez. Estevez scored on a sac fly to right from Charity Niece to make the score 3-0.
In the bottom of the third with two outs, Harlan’s Savannah Sergent and Tia King both received walks followed by back-to-back singles from Destiny Jenkins and Bridget Robinson to cut the lead 3-2.
In the fourth inning, Charity Niece led off with a single, McKenzie Gibson got a walk and Makayla Seals moved both runners over with a fielder’s choice. Melissa Bartley hit a triple to center to drive them in for the 5-2 lead.
In the fifth inning, Lexi Stambaugh led off with a double to left and got to third on a wild pitch. Whitney Creech got a walk and stole second. Mercedes Boggs reached base on an error, scoring Stambaugh. Creech and Boggs both scored on a fielding error to increase the lead to 8-2.
In the sixth inning, Harlan pulled the starting pitcher Destiny Jenkins and brought in Jesse Johnson. Makayla Seals got the Lady Cavs started with a single to left, followed by a walk for Melissa Bartley. Lexi Stambaugh cleared the bases with a triple to left and Whitney Creech hit a fielder’s choice to score Stambaugh to make the final score 11-2.
April Charles’s Lady Cavaliers picked up their 20th win on the season. Caitlynn Estevez got the win with 2 runs on 3 hits. Jesse Jenkins picked up the loss as Harlan gave up 11 runs on 10 hits.
