Artist and musician John Haywood, a Floyd County native, will exhibit his oil paintings and prints of Appalachian life this week at the Mountain Heritage Festival. His paintings range from old-time mine scenes to a mountain string band and will be on display Thursday through Saturday in the arts and crafts booths.
Galleries including the Cinderblock and Swanson Reed Contemporary in Louisville have carried Haywood’s artwork. He also sells work through the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, and is a juried member of the Kentucky Arts Council’s Visual Art at the market program.
“I think that with the way things are today, people are looking for work that will connect them to something or someplace. As our culture becomes more and more homogenized, we are los- ing many of the characteristics that make us unique,” says Haywood.
Haywood lives in Louisville with his wife, Letcher County native Kelli (Hansel) Haywood, and their daughter, Deladis Rose Haywood.
