Johnson rites held




Funeral services for Daniel Van Johnson Sr., 88, were held July 5 at Carty Funeral Home. Burial was in the Jackhorn Cemetery.

Born at Jackhorn, he was a son of the late John Henry and Lee Oma Potter Johnson. He was married to the late Opal Oneida Land Johnson.

Johnson worked in the coal mines from an early age until he was injured. He then worked at Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital until his retirement. He was active in the union at WARH, and was a president and union organizer of the United Mine Workers.

He was a member of the Hemphill Church of Christ, and was a avid gardener.

Surviving are nine children, Daniel V. Johnson Jr. and wife Andrea, Spotsylvania, Va.; Oma Lou Blue, Sevierville, Tenn.; Brenda A. Sparks and husband Larry, Mayking; Celeste Johnson and husband James, McRoberts; Noah Lee Champion and wife Fran, Greenville, Tenn.; Anthony Holbrook and wife Elizabeth, Eric Holbrook, Jennifer Meeks and husband Steve, and Lovene Bentley and husband Craig, all of Kona; 16 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
