Judge’s race heats up here

Letcher County’s race for judge/ executive has heated up.

A race that normally sees only a couple of candidates now has five, including former Letcher Circuit Judge and Kentucky Supreme Court Justice Samuel T. Wright.

Judge/Executive Terry Adams is so far the only Republican on the ballot, but Wright joins three other Democrats in the race. Also running on that party’s ticket are former magistrate Codell Gibson, Eddie Wayne Cooper, who is retired from Alpha Natural Resources, and Elizabeth Looney, an insurance agent.

Wright is a surprise candidate. He has been a member of the judiciary since the mid-1980s has never run for a partisan political office before. He has served as Letcher District Judge, Letcher Circuit Judge and Supreme Court Justice.

Just two other candidates have filed for office in the county in the past week and only one of those will be on the primary ballot. Jordan Absher of Whitesburg filed for District 1 Constable.

Larry Everidge, a current city councilman in Whitesburg, has filed for re-election, but the office is nonpartisan so he will not run in the primary election. His name will appear on the ballot in November.
