Jurors accuse 22 here



The Letcher Grand Jury has indicted a convicted sex offender it says did not register when he moved to Kentucky in November.

James Edward Guinn, 26, 63 Tennessee Avenue, Whitesburg, is charged with failure to comply with sex offender registration. He is also charged with being a persistent felony offender.

Larry Caudill of Probation and Parole testified in the case.

Others indicted are:

• Robert Steve Hamilton Jr. — assault, kidnapping, cruelty to animals and being a persistent felony offender.

Hamilton, 28, of 351 Crossover Road, Mayking, is charged with kidnapping, beating and stabbing Tina Wells on January 16. He is also accused of cruelty to animals.

Kentucky State Police Detective Kevin A. Hurt testified in the case.

• James Edward Sturgill — criminal mischief and cruelty to animals.

The grand jury says Sturgill, 42, of 109 Hwy. 3404, Partridge, damaged the singlewide mobile home rented to him by Pamela Surber and Patricia Surber in December 2012. He is also charged with leaving his dog tied up in the mobile home without adequate food, drink, space or care.

• Christopher Shane McClain — burglary and theft.

McClain, 31, of 110 Mitch Drive, Jeremiah, is accused of entering the home of Tyrone Fields in Whitesburg on January 31, and being armed with a deadly weapon. He is also charged with theft of a firearm belonging to the City of Whitesburg and issued to Whitesburg City Police Chief Fields.

In a second indictment, McClain is charged with theft. The grand jury says he obtained $1,800 by making it appear he had purchased drugs from an alleged drug dealer in a controlled buy of the Kentucky State Police – DESI East on July 31, 2012.

• Aaron R. Hughes — complicity to theft.

Hughes, 23, of 405 Hylton Church Road, Jenkins, is charged with acting with Eric Ison and Jonathan Collier in taking property valued at $500 or more belonging to Donald Collier during the period of May 15, 2012 to June 8, 2012.

• Eric D. Ison — complicity to theft.

Ison, 22, of 5359 Hwy. 931 S, Whitesburg, is charged with acting with Aaron R. Hughes and Jonathan Collier in taking property valued at $500 or more belonging to Donald Collier during the period of May 15, 2012 to June 8, 2012.

• Jonathan R. Collier — complicity to theft.

Collier, 24, also known as Neal McCurdy, is charged with acting with Eric Ison and Aaron R. Hughes in taking property valued at $500 or more belonging to Donald Collier during the period of May 15, 2012 to June 8, 2012.

• Robert Brent Cornett — complicity to burglary, complicity to theft, complicity to criminal mischief and being a persistent felony offender.

The grand jury says Cornett, 35, of 247 Cornett’s Branch, Linefork, acted with Bryan Sprader in entering a home at 15236 Hwy. 160, Linefork on January 30, and with taking property valued at more than $500 belonging to Mr. and Mrs. Greg Roark. He is also charged with damaging the Roark residence.

• Bryan Joseph Sprader — complicity to burglary, complicity to theft, complicity to criminal mischief and being a persistent felony offender.

The grand jury says Sprader, 33, of 518 Flintfield Branch, Linefork, acted with Robert Brent Cornett in entering a home at 15236 Hwy. 160, Linefork on January 30, and with taking property valued at more than $500 belonging to Mr. and Mrs. Greg Roark. He is also charged with damaging the Roark residence.

• Mark Gideon Hogg — menacing and assault on a police officer.

Hogg, 41, of 13428 Hwy. 588, Blackey, is charged with aggressively lunging at Kentucky Trooper Donald White and Letcher County Deputy Sheriffs Scott Taylor and Brian Damron on December 18, 2012. He is also accused of injuring or attempting to injury Lt. Damron.

• Lalita Renee Shepherd — complicity to burglary and complicity to theft.

Shepherd, 29, of 484 Henry Hutton Road, Neon, is accused of acting with Joe Duty and Guylene Fannin in entering the home of Crystal Sexton at 492 Henry Hutton Road, Neon, on December 13, 2012. She is also charged with taking coins, currency, jewelry, documents, photo albums and other items belong to Sexton and valued at $500 or more.

• Joseph “Joe” Duty — complicity to burglary and complicity to theft.

Duty is accused of acting with Lalita Renee Shepherd and Guylene Fannin in entering the home of Crystal Sexton at 492 Henry Hutton Road, Neon, on December 13, 2012. He is also charged with taking coins, currency, jewelry, documents, photo albums and other items belong to Sexton and valued at $500 or more.

• Guylene Joy Fannin — complicity to burglary and complicity to theft.

Fannin, 46, of 484 Henry Hutton Road, Neon, is accused of acting with Joseph ‘Joe’ Duty and Lalita Renee Shepherd in entering the home of Crystal Sexon at 492 Henry Hutton Road, Neon, on December 13, 2012. She is also charged with taking coins, currency, jewelry, documents, photo albums and other items belong to Sexton and valued at $500 or more.

• Paul Vester Bentley — theft of farm equipment.

The grand jury says Bentley, 47, of 8976 Big Branch, Virgie, took an antique gristmill, three garden tillers and a pickup truck door belong to Emogene Bentley on July 29, 2011.

• Leland Jackson Walker III — operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs, failure to produce insurance card, failure to maintain insurance, no/expired Kentucky registration receipt, possession of marijuana, controlled substance not in original container, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance (oxycodone) and wanton endangerment.

Walker, 32, of 100 Cliff Road, Putney, is charged with operating a vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants and with refusing to submit to a blood test on Sept. 5, 2012. He is also accused of being in possession of marijuana, rolling papers, and oxycodone, and with endangering a member of the Cumberland Fire Department who was on the scene of an accident when Walker nearly ran him down with his automobile.

• Oscar Daniel Craft — promoting contraband, tampering with evidence and being a persistent felony offender.

Craft, 58, of 186 Elaine Drive, Mayking, is charged with introducing a Suboxone strip, a Schedule II controlled substance, into the Letcher County Jail on January 17. He is also accused of attempting to flush the Suboxone strip down a toilet.

• James Patrick Owens — cultivation of marijuana and possession of marijuana.

The grand jury says Owens, 48, of 2506 Flat Gap Road, Eolia, cultivated marijuana, a Schedule I hallucinogen, with the intent to sell it. He is also charged with having less than eight ounces of marijuana in his possession on August 5, 2009.

• Joseph Steven Cook — cultivation of marijuana.

Cook, 49, of Charlie Cornett Road, Whitesburg, is charged with cultivating marijuana with the intent to sell it on April 21, 2011.

• Kevin L. Houston — bail jumping and being a persistent felony offender.

Houston, 27, of 164 Bill Lewis Hollow, Whitesburg, is charged with failure to appear at Letcher Circuit Court for a jury trial in connection with a felony charge on Nov. 26, 2012.

In a second indictment, Houston is charged with bail jumping for failure to appear at Letcher Circuit Court for a jury trial in connection with a felony charge on Nov. 26, 2012, and with being a persistent felony offender.

In a third indictment, Houston is charged with bail jumping for failure to appear at Letcher Circuit Court for a jury trial in connection with a felony charge on Nov. 26, 2012, and with being a persistent felony offender.

• Eric Dean Fleming — bail jumping and being a persistent felony offender.

Fleming, 31, of 213 Chopping Branch, McRoberts, is charged with failure to appear at Letcher Circuit Court for a sentencing hearing in connection with a felony charge on Jan. 9, 2013.

In a second indictment, Fleming is charged with bail jumping for failure to appear at Letcher Circuit Court for a sentencing hearing in connection with a felony charge on Jan. 9, 2013, and with being a persistent felony offender.

In a third indictment, Fleming is charged with bail jumping for failure to appear at Letcher Circuit Court for a sentencing hearing in connection with a felony charge on Jan. 9, 2013, and with being a persistent felony offender.

• Dylan Macial Rose — bail jumping and being a persistent felony offender.

Rose, 21, of P.O. Box 492, Neon, is charged with failure to appear at Letcher Circuit Court for a jury trial in connection with a felony charge on Feb. 25, 2013.

• Billy Gibson, 23, of 91 Orange Drive, Whitesburg, is charged with being a persistent felony offender.
