Jury charges driver in fatal wreck

A Letcher County Grand Jury has charged a Little Cowan man with second-degree manslaughter after a car crash last August that killed Lowell Z. Ison of Jeremiah.

David Anthony Day, 30, 280 Hwy 2035, Whitesburg, is charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol (first offense with aggravating circumstances), second-degree manslaughter ( vehicular homicide), and first-degree criminal mischief.

According to the indictment, Day was under the influence of drugs when the head-on crash occurred at Mayking.

Ison, 75, died and Day, the driver of the other vehicle, was seriously injured in the collision on U.S. 119 North at Mayking, Kentucky State Police said at the time.

The incident occurred about 10 a.m. August 31, 2020, just north of the Mayking Dollar General Store.

Kentucky State Police said Day was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer south toward Whitesburg on US 119 when he crossed into the northbound lane and struck a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Ison head-on.

Ison was pronounced dead at the scene. Day was taken by ambulance to Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital and then flown to Pikeville Medical Center. Police say there were no other passengers.

Day is already in the Letcher County Jail on charges of second-degree escape and two counts of first-degree bail jumping unrelated to the current indictment.
