Keeping Christmas in our hearts

Whew! We have been busy, busy at the center and the bakery.

Friday Nite Pickin’ (our weekly music event) was really great, as always. Will Caudill and RT 7 was the featured band and they performed very well.

The breakfast with Santa was such a success. Santa was held up between the North Pole and Hemphill and was a little late getting to us. The squeals of delight from the children when he made his grand entrance were joyful to hear. He came in dancing and singing and then sat for hours in a throng of children clamoring for his attention. Many thanks to Jolly Ole Saint Nicholas! You rock!

Sometimes with this hectic season we get bogged down with all our duties and financials and lose sight of the reason for the season. Faith and family are our strong suits here in these mountains where life has always been a challenge and has never been easy, especially in the wintertime. Depression (because of light deprivation as the season darkens, changing situations in families, separation anxiety, loss of jobs, addiction, etc.) tugs at the heart and mind. Statistics on suicide are up exponentially at this time every year.

I have a few coping helps in my bag of tricks so I’m going to share one that helps me keep Christmas in my heart each year. It is an old document I found in my grandmother’s things after she passed away. It reminds us of the needs and despair of some during this supposedly most joyful time of year. May we always keep Christmas in our hearts! Reach out for those who may need a bit of extra encouragement to keep standing upright during this festive season!
