KFTC to hold rally Thursday in Frankfort

Environmentalists from throughout Kentucky will gather at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow (Thursday) for a rally on the steps of the State Capitol in Frankfort.

“I Love Mountains Day” – which will take place on Valentine’s Day – is designed to “send a message to legislators and the coal industry that the people of Kentucky want the extreme abuses of mountaintop removal and burying streams stopped in Kentucky,” said Doug Doerrfeld, chairperson of Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, the sponsor of the rally

“We want to show state legislators how important it is for those of us who live in the mountains to have good water,” said Beverly May, a Floyd County KFTC member. “We specifically want people to come to show their support for House Bill 164 that will protect our headwater streams.”

In addition to several coalfield residents, speakers will include author Wendell Berry and the Rev. John Rausch, recipient of the 2007 Teacher of Peace Award given by Pax Christi USA. Music will be provided by Public Outcry and Randy Wilson.
