Labor Day celebrated at Hemphill

A Labor Day celebration was held Sept. 2 at the Letcher County Coal Miners Memorial. The event include the third annual candle lighting. Bluegrass music was provided by Dawson Creek and Mountain Melody.

Attending were board members of the Letcher County Coal Miners Organization including Leonard Fleming, Norma Fleming, Ross Fleming, Robert ‘Rob’ Fleming, Mark Spangler, Twalla Brown and Mable Johnson.

Richard Stewart, Starla Hampton and Gwen Johnson ran a concession stand to raise funds for the Hemphill Community Center, and the Jenkins Middle School Band Boosters sponsored a bake sale run by Debbie Spangler and members of the band.

Also present were State Rep. Leslie Combs, Letcher County Judge/Executive Jim Ward, Joan Ward, Assistant County Judge Eddie Meade, Fifth Magistrate Wayne Fleming, members of the Whitesburg Bike Nite Club, and a large crowd.

Robert ‘Rob’ Fleming and Mark Spangler organized the celebration.
