The Jenkins Lady Cavaliers defeated Cordia and Letcher County Central this week to claim the championship of the 53rd District Fast Pitch Softball Tournament.
Monday’s 15-0 win over Cordia and Tuesday’s 14-4 win over Letcher Central came after the Lady Cavs split four games to end the regular season.
In the first inning of the game against Cordia, Melissa Bartley received a walk, Mercedes Boggs singled her in, and Charity Niece tripled to drive in Boggs. In the second inning Jenkins sent 15 batters to the plate, scoring nine runs on four hits — triples by Charity Niece and Lexi Stambaugh, a single by Whitney Creech, and a double by Ally DePriest. The Lady Cavs also collected six walks and two hit batters to make the score 11-0 at the end of two.
In the third inning Jenkins sent seven batters to the plate with five walks and one hit batter, making the final score 15-0. Charity Niece went 2 for 2, with two triples and four RBI’s.
In Tuesday’s championship game, Letcher County Central’s Katlyn Creech reached base in the first inning on a strikeout passed ball, then stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a fielding error.
In the bottom half of the inning, Brittany Mullins took a walk and Melissa Bartley was hit by a pitch. Mercedes Boggs then doubled and scored both runners. Caitlynn Estevez singled to bring in Boggs to give Jenkins a 3-1 lead.
In the second inning, LCC’s Cheyenne Stidham walked and moved around the bases to cut the lead to 3-2.
The Lady Cavs answered with five runs in the bottom of the second. Melissa Bartley reached base on a fielder’s choice, Mercedes Boggs singled, and Charity Niece tripled to bring both runners in before courtesy runner Taylor Johnson scored on a passed ball. Lexi Stambaugh and Whitney Creech also had singles and both were moved over on errors before scoring on passed balls to give the Lady Cavs a 7-2 lead.
In the third inning, LCC got two runs back as Seanna Coots singled, Emily Blair walked, and Makaley Johnson hit into a fielder’s choice. Cheyenne Stidham hit into a fielder’s choice to score Coots and Johnson scored on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the third the Cavs added three more runs. Brittany Mullins reached base on a throwing error and scored on a passed ball. Mercedes Boggs singled and Charity Niece walked. Caitlynn Estevez singled to scored both Boggs and Niece to give the Lady Cavs a 10-4 lead.
Jenkins added a run in the fourth with Whitney Creech reaching on an error and Ally DePriest hitting a triple to score Creech. Jenkins scored three more runs with two outs in the sixth. Mercedes Boggs singled, Charity Niece tripled to score Boggs. Caitlynn Estevez doubled to score courtesy runner Taylor Johnson, and Lexi Stambaugh doubled to knock in courtesy runner Makayla Seals.
Caitlynn Estevez picked up the win, giving up four runs on five hits, while recording 10 strikeouts.
LCC’s Makaley Johnson gave up 14 runs on 16 hits while striking out five.
