Lady Cavs are All ‘A’




On Saturday afternoon, the Jenkins Lady Cavaliers traveled to Campton to take on Wolfe County in the Touchstone Energy All A 14th Region championship game.

Wolfe County got on the board first with a triple by Haley Patton and she scored on a Cavalier error. Jenkins came back strong in the bottom of the first as lead off Melissa Bartley singled and scored on an in-the-park homerun to right field by Mercedes Boggs, making the score 2-1.

In the second inning, the Lady Cavs added more runs as Makayla Seals and Melissa Bartley reached base on errors. Lexi Stambaugh hit a double to left field to score Seals and Whitney Creech hit a sac fly to score Bartley.

In the fourth inning, Taylor Johnson reached base on an error, followed by singles from Seals and Bartley. Lexi Stambaugh hit a sac fly to score Johnson and Rachel Spangler, running for Seals, scored on an error to increase the lead to 6-1.

Jenkins added two more runs as Wolfe committed two more errors, and Jenkins had singles by Taylor Johnson and Lexi Stambaugh to make the score 8-1.

In the seventh inning, the Cavaliers ended the game with a double play as a line drive was hit to Stambaugh at first and she threw to Mercedes Boggs to pick off Haley Patton at second to end the game.

Caitlynn Estevez picked up the win with a two-hit, one-run game, with 10 strikeouts. Jenkins had eight runs on 11 hits.

Coach April Charles picked up her seventh All A Region championship.

Jenkins will travel to Owensboro on April 26 for the state tournament and begin pool play against Middlesboro, Walton- Verona, and Green County.

The 14th Region Touchstone Energy All A Classic began April 8 as the Jenkins Lady Cavaliers traveled to Leslie County to play the first round. Jenkins got things started early as Melissa Bartley lead off with a single, stole second and scored on a fielding error.

Leslie County answered with a lead off double by Marissa Davidson, and a fielder’s choice moved her to third.

Davidson scored on a single from Lyndsey Shepherd to tie the game 1-1.

The Lady Cavs came right back in the second inning as Caitlynn Estevez hit a double, followed by singles from Charity Niece and Melissa Bartley to add two runs. Jenkins gave one run back on a fielding error and two walks to cut the lead to 3-2 after two innings.

In the third inning, Whitney Creech doubled and Mercedes Boggs singled, and Creech scored on a throwing error. Boggs scored on a single from Caitlynn Estevez’s second double to give Jenkins the 5-2 lead after three innings.

Charity Niece helped the Lady Cavs out of a jam in the third, with bases loaded for the Lady Eagles and two outs. Niece caught the runner leaning off base and threw to Lexi Stambaugh at first to pick the runner off for the third out.

After that the Lady Cavs never looked back. In the sixth inning they added five more runs to make the final score 10-2. Jenkins had 10 runs on 12 hits.

With a forfeit from Cordia, Jenkins moved straight to the championship game.
