Lady Cavs get middle school title

Whitney Creech’s game-high 38 points led the Jenkins Middle School Lady Cavaliers to a 45-36 victory over Martha Jane Potter Elementary in the finals of the 2011 Letcher County Elementary Girls’ Basketball Tournament at Letcher County Central this past Sunday afternoon.

Cowan Elementary defeated Fleming-Neon Elementary 37-22 in the consolation game.

Creech, an eighth- grader, scored 7 of her team’s first 9 points as the Lady Cavaliers led coldshooting MJP 9-3 at the end of the opening quarter.

Creech scored all 14 of her team’s second quarter points to offset a MJP rally that allowed the Lady Cardinals to close to within 23-18 at the half.

The Lady Cardinals’ shooting woes returned in the third quarter and they had no answer for Creech, who singlehandedly took over the game on both ends of the floor, rebounding on one end and racing to the other end for a lay-up or a trip to the charity line. Creech, who made just 3-of-9 third quarter free throws, still managed to score all 18 of her team’s third quarter points and JMS pushed its lead to 41-20 heading into the final quarter. For the game, Creech converted 11-of-20 free throw chances.

With Creech lifted in the final minute, MJP scored 8 straight points to cut the Lady Cavaliers’ lead to 43-36 and Creech came back into the game to settle her teammates down.

Alyssa Hibbits scored two points for JMS and Taylor Johnson and Lexi Stambaugh added one point each.

Skye Johnson and Victoria Bates led MJP with 10 points each. Ally Damron and Samantha Tubbs scored 4 points each. Shea Rose and Grayson Collier chipped in with 3 points each and Taylor Ison finished with two points.
