The Jenkins High School Lady Cavaliers whipped Cordia High School Monday, 15-0, to win their first-round game in the 2015 53rd District Fast Pitch Softball Tournament at Letcher County Central High School.
In Monday’s second game, Knott County Central edged Letcher Central, 5-4, for the right to face Jenkins in Tuesday night’s district final.
Monday night’s win in a game called after three innings improved the Lady Cavaliers’ record to 25-6, best in the 14th Region.
In the final game of the regular season, held May 16, Jenkins hosted 13th Region power Harlan County, but fell 10-5.
Jenkins jumped out early as Whitney Creech got on with a single, and Lexi Stambaugh sacrifice bunted to send Creech to third. Caitlynn Estevez singled to left to score Creech for a 1-0 lead.
With two outs in the fifth inning, Whitney Creech hit a solo home run to center, Lexi Stambaugh hit a triple to center, and Melissa Bartley hit a home run to right center for a 4-0 lead.
Things fell apart in the sixth for the Lady Cavs as Harlan County sent 13 batters to the plate, scoring 9 runs.
Each team would add another run to make the final 10-5.
Magoffin County 4
On May 15, the Lady Cavaliers held their Senior Night and said goodbye to Charity Niece and Caitlynn Estevez, the catcher and pitcher, who will be greatly missed.
Magoffin County traveled to play the Lady Cavs at Jenkins and scored first in the third inning when Jazzy Howard got an infield single, stole second and went to third on an error. Laylee Burchell singled to score Howard.
Jenkins took a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Caitlynn Estevez singled, Charity Niece got a walk and Rachel Spangler tripled to right to score courtesy runner Katie DePriest and Niece.
In the fifth inning, Magoffin loaded the bases with 2 walks and an infield single by Howard, Burchell cleared the bases with a double to center to take the 4-2 lead.
In the bottom half of the fifth, Jenkins loaded the bases on 3 straight walks, and Melissa Bartley singled to score Taylor Johnson. Caitlynn Estevez hit a rope down third base line to clear the bases and ended up on third.
Jenkins reloaded the bases on 2 walks and Makayla Seals was hit by a pitch to score Katie DePriest. Jenkins added a couple of runs in the sixth to pick up the 8-4 win.
On May 12, the Lady Cavs played Hazard. In the first inning Jenkins gave Hazard a run as Brianna Sparkman reached base on a walk, got to second on a fielder’s choice, and Robinson hit a single to left. Sparkman scored on a fielding error.
In the fifth inning, the Lady Cavs loaded the bases as Whitney Creech doubled to center, Lexi Stambaugh got a walk and Melissa Bartley had a bunt single. Caitlynn Estevez hit Creech in to tie the game 1-1.
In the sixth inning, Jenkins gave the run back as Robinson reached base on a fielder’s choice and scored on a throwing error.
The Lady Cavs answered in the bottom of the sixth as Rachel Spangler led off with a double to center, McKenzie Gibson had an infield single and both runners moved up on a passed ball. Taylor Johnson had an infield single to load the bases and Lexi Stambaugh had a sacrifice fly that scored Spangler.
Melissa Bartley singled to right to score Gibson and make the final score 4-2.
Jenkins had 4 runs on 9 hits and Hazard had 2 runs on 5 hits. Jenkins pitcher Caitlynn Estevez had 9 strikeouts.
Knott Central 2
The Jenkins Lady Cavaliers traveled to play Knott County Central May 9 in a district match-up. Jenkins’ triple threat set the tone for the game.
Charity Niece led off with an in-the-park home run to right field. Lexi Stambaugh followed with a double to center, and Melissa Bartley hit one to center for another in-the-park home run.
In her second time up, Lexi Stambaugh came to the plate with bases loaded and hit a deep one to center for a grand slam.
Jenkins sent 20 batters to the plate, scoring 16 runs on 7 hits in the first inning.
KCC’s Baker reached base on an error and scored on a double hit to center. Hannah Slone hit a single to score the runner from second to make the score 16-2 at the end of the first inning.
In the second inning, Jenkins added 5 runs to make the final score 21-2.
Jenkins had 21 runs on 9 hits, 3 of them home runs, KCC had 2 runs on 4 hits.
