Lady Cavs rebound after falling to Letcher Central

The Letcher County Central Lady Cougars defeated Jenkins Lady Cavaliers on Senior Day at Ermine. Honored before the game were LCC seniors Carli Combs, Cheyanne Stidham, Kaitlynn Whitaker and MaKayley Johnson.

In an earlier match-up of these two teams Jenkins came out the winner, but the Lady Cavs did not play to their potential and LCC took advantage of their mistakes. Combined, the two teams walked 12 batters, hit five batters and committed eight errors.

The scoring didn’t start until the third inning as Melissa Bartley received a walk, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error. Bartley scored on a fielder’s choice from Caitlynn Estevez to give Jenkins the 1-0 lead.

LCC answered with two runs. Cheyanne Stidham and Alyssa Franklin both reached base on fielding errors and Kaitlynn Whitaker loaded the bases with a walk. Makayley Johnson hit a single to right field to score Stidham and Franklin.

In the fourth inning with two outs, Carli Combs was hit by a pitch and Emily Johnson reached base on an error. Cheyanne Stidham hit an infield single and Combs scored to give LCC a 3-1 lead.

In the seventh inning, the Cavaliers’ bats came to life as Lexi Stambaugh led off with a double to right and Melissa Bartley followed with a double to center to score Stambaugh.

The third double came from Caitlynn Estevez to score Bartley. Whitney Creech came in with a bunt single to move Estevez to third, after which Creech stole second. A bunt attempt by McKenzie Gibson was successful, but Estevez was tagged out at home. Makayla Seals lay down a sacrifice bunt to score Creech and give Jenkins the 4-3 lead.

Jenkins’ trouble continued in the bottom of the seventh inning. Alyssa Franklin reached base with a single, Kaitlynn Whitaker doubled to right center and Franklin was thrown out at home trying to score from first.

It looked like Jenkins had control when MaKayley Johnson hit an infield ground ball with Whitaker making the attempt to score. The ball was thrown over the catcher’s head, allowing Whitaker to score.

The error also allowed Johnson to move to third. She scored on a wild pitch to end the game and give LCC the 5-4 win. Jenkins had four runs on six hits and LCC had five runs on five hits.
