Jenkins traveled to Norton, Va., to take on J.I. Burton last week.
Burton jumped out quickly on the Lady Cavs. In the first inning, the lead off batter received a walk, the second batter singled and the third doubled to left to score two runs. J.I. Burton loaded the bases and Estevez got Jenkins out of the jam with three strikeouts.
In the third inning, Burton got two singles, and both runners scored on errors by the Lady Cavs to take the 4-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, Whitney Creech reached base with a leadoff walk and McKenzie Gibson singled. With two outs, Charity Niece doubled to score Creech and Gibson. Lexi Stambaugh singled to center, scoring Niece and cutting Burton’s lead to 4-3.
In the sixth inning, Niece and Stambaugh led off with back-toback singles, and both runners advanced on a passed ball. Melissa Bartley doubled to center to score both runners and gave the Lady Cavs the 5-4 lead.
Jenkins picked up added insurance in the seventh as Rachel Spangler drove in Whitney Creech for the final score of 6-4.
On March 24, Sheldon Clark traveled to Jenkins for their first meeting. Sheldon Clark’s Hope Lafferty reached base on a fielding error in the first inning, got to third and scored on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the half, the Lady Cavs answered. Charity Niece received a walk and scored on a double to left from Lexi Stambaugh. Stambaugh stole third and scored on a passed ball. Melissa Bartley received a walk, stole to third, and scored on a single from Makayla Seals to give the Lady Cavs the 3-1 lead.
In the fourth inning, Deidra Banks and Charity Niece both received walks. Niece scored on a passed ball and Lexi Stambaugh doubled to score Banks.
Melissa Bartley drove in Stambaugh, and Caitlynn Estevez’s double was followed by Makayla Seals’s single to score courtesy runner Katie DePriest, giving Jenkins the 6-1 lead.
In the fifth inning, Rachel Spangler led off with a single and moved to second on a passed ball. Deidra Banks moved her to third. Charity Niece reached base on a walk and stole second. Lexi Stambaugh hit her third double to score Spangler.
Melissa Bartley had a shot to center to clear the bases, scoring Niece and Stambaugh. Bartley then scored on a fielding error to make the final score 11-1.
Jenkins picked up its fifth win with 11 runs on 10 hits. Sheldon Clark had 1 run on no hits. Caitlynn Estevez had 10 strikeouts and 3 walks.
Jenkins 14 Belfrey 4
The Jenkins Lady Cavaliers traveled to Belfry March 23 to take on the Lady Pirates for their second meeting. This game was much closer than the first one with a 14-4 win for Jenkins. This game turned out to be a pitchers’ duel.
Things did not get started until the fourth inning when catcher Charity Niece reached base on a walk, and Lexi Stambaugh reached base on a fielder’s choice.
Melissa Bartley then sent a triple to center to score Stambaugh, and Caitlynn Estevez doubled to left to score Bartley and take a 2-0 lead.
In the sixth inning Belfry committed two errors; Lexi Stambaugh hit a fly ball to right that was dropped, and she landed on third, and Melissa Bartley hit a fly ball to right and hers was also dropped, scoring Stambaugh for a score of 3-0.
Belfry loaded the bases to make a threat, but hit into a fielder’s choice and a game-winning double play from pitcher Caitlynn Estevez to catcher Charity Niece, then to first baseman Lexi Stambaugh for the 1-2- 3-play.
