Lady Cougars beat Lady Bobcats

On Sept. 29, the Betsy Layne Lady Bobcats came to town for the fourth showdown between them and the Letcher Central Lady Cougars. The Lady Cougars won for the third time in this series 2-0 (25-19, 25-15).

In the first set, Letcher Central jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in winning 25-19. The Lady Cougars were led by the setting of sophomore Janetta Dixon and the hitting/ spiking of seniors Victoria Halcomb and Sierra Bates. Junior Lisa Frazier had a great game spiking and serving as did fellow junior Myrika Begley who had another good night hitting. Sophomore Erica Meade turned in another fine performance digging and passing in the backcourt.

In the second set, the Lady Cougars jumped out to a big lead and cruised to an easy 25-15 win. Victoria Halcomb turned in one of her finest performances of the season as she played extremely well blocking and hitting. Brittany Sexton, Sierra Bates, and Lisa Frazier played strong around the net as they scored numerous points spiking the ball. Freshman Ari Nichols had another solid night serving. The Lady Bobcats had a hard time returning them and she recorded several aces. Sophomore Sierra Dixon also had a good night digging and passing in the backcourt.

On Oct. 1, the Lady Cougars traveled to Belfry to take on the Lady Pirates for a showdown between two of the top volleyball powerhouses in the mountains. When the smoked cleared, the Lady Cougars had won their 28th match of the season 2-1 (25-19, 21-25, 25- 18). This was the first time in several seasons that the Lady Cougars have defeated the Lady Pirates.

First Set: The Lady Cougars pulled out a 25-19 win due to the strong serving of freshman Ari Nichols and sophomore Sierra Dixon. Seniors Sierra Bates and Victoria Halcomb did a good job hitting around the net. Sophomore Erica Meade also played well again in the backcourt, digging and passing.

Second Set: After losing the first set, the Lady Pirates came out fired up and pulled out a close 25-21, win. This set was close throughout. Junior Lisa Frazier performed well blocking and spiking. Fellow junior Myrika Begley also played well hitting the ball. Seniors Sierra Bates and Brittany Sexton spiked and hit the ball really well around the net. Sierra Dixon again did a good job serving and sophomore Libero Kristin Blair had a good set digging and passing from the backcourt.

Third Set: The Lady Cougars jumped out to an early lead due to the solid serving of sophomore Janetta Dixon and never looked back in winning the third and deciding set 25-18. She was supported by the serving of her sister, Sierra Dixon, and fellow teammate Ari Nichols. Lisa Frazier played outstandingly blocking and tipping the ball. Myrika Begley, Victoria Halcomb, and Sierra Bates all hit the ball well to ensure a Lady Cougar victory. Erica Meade again had a solid set digging, passing, and hitting.
