The Letcher County Central Lady Cougars volleyball team, 24-5 after Monday’s victory at Shelby Valley, is the prohibitive favorites to repeat as 53rd District and 14th Region champion and advance to the state tournament again this year.
The Lady Cougars, coached by Dickie Adams, are now preparing for the 53rd District tournament, which begins at Knott Central on October 14. Letcher Central will play the winner of a match between Jenkins and Knott Central the night before. The 14th Regional Tournament will follow the next week at Leslie County.
The 2010 version of the Lady Cougar volleyball team had to replace several key players lost from the squad from last year. Gone are several all district and all region players.
The Player of the Year in the 14th Region, Victoria Halcomb, graduated and losing that group left quite a hole in the Cougar lineup. Seniors Rachel Baker, Lauren Thomas, Myrika Begley, and Lisa Frazier return to lead the Lady Cougars into the new season.
The Lady Cougars are 10-0 in the 14th Region and once again the top rated team in the region this year as selected by the coaches.
The season started with a seeding tournament for the 53rd District at Knott Central. The Lady Cougars won that round robin style tournament, then won the East-West Spikefest at Estill County. Junior three-year starters Janetta Dixon and Kristin Blair, along with junior Sierra Dixon, provide valuable experience and back row play. Sophomores Ari Nichols, Emi Nichols, Julie Cornett, and Keisha Collins have provided strong front row play and depth for this years’ team. This year’s JV team has a record of 7 wins and 2 losses and the freshmen team enjoys a 6 win and 2 losses record.
The 2010 KHSAA State Tournament will be held at Bellarmine University in Louisville the week of October 25. The Lady Cougars look to improve their play as the post season tournaments approach.
