The Letcher Central High School Lady Cougars were scheduled to host highly regarded Shelby Valley tonight (Wednesday), and then visit Knott County Central on Friday evening. The Lady Cougars will take on Pike County Central in the Lady Hawk 1-Day Showcase at 2 p.m. on Saturday. LCC visits Belfry next Monday.
Letcher Central 52 June Buchanan 48
The Letcher Central Lady Cougars snapped a five-game losing streak January 17 with their 52-48 victory over visiting June Buchanan.
There were two lead changes early before back-to-back baskets by junior Destiny Hall gave the Lady Cougars an 8-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Five consecutive points by junior guard Alyssa Adams pushed LCC’s lead to 17-12 with 2:29 left in the first half, but JBS had closed to within 22-21 at the break.
June Buchanan took its last lead of the game at 24-22 on Kaitlyn Everidge’s trey with 2:35 left in the third quarter.
Senior center Samantha Tubbs then stepped up offensively for the Lady Cougars. Her scoring fueled an 8-0 run that pushed LCC’s lead to 32-24 with 4:30 left in the third quarter.
Tubbs, who finished with a team-high 14 points, scored 11 of those points in the third to give her Lady Cougars a 40-29 lead heading into the final quarter.
Down the stretch, the play of Alyssa Adams on both ends of the floor was key to LCC’s victory. Adams, a 5-7 junior guard, finished with a team-high 14 points, nine rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Sophomore guard Lindsey Proffitt led the Lady Crusaders’ run of eight straight points with a couple of treys and JBS closed to within 43-39 with 3:20 left to play.
LCC responded defensively and then made key free throws down the stretch to hold off the Lady Crusaders.
LCC, now 5-12, forced the Lady Crusaders into 18 turnovers and limited their shooting to 20/49 field goal attempts for 41 percent.
The Lady Cougars shot 49 percent on 22/45 field goal attempts.
Lindsay Proffitt led 9-7 JBS with 18 points and 10 rebounds, but she committed six turnovers against three assists and one steal. Alexis Likens scored nine points while Kaitlyn Everidge and Megan Hall finished with seven points each.
Paige Caudill and Shelby Hall scored eight points each for LCC. Destiny Hall finished with four points. Grayson Collier and Emma Maggard chipped in with two points each.
Pikeville 48 Letcher Central 41
The Pikeville Lady Panthers rallied in the fourth quarter to edge visiting Letcher Central 48- 41 Jan. 14.
The Lady Cougars trailed much of the first half before rallying behind junior guard Alyssa Adams to take the lead going into the final quarter.
Pikeville led 16-11 after the opening quarter and 25-22 at the half.
Alyssa Adams scored six of her team high 11 points in the third quarter as LCC rallied for a 33-31 lead heading into the third quarter.
Pikeville, now 7-5, was led in scoring by Leslie Stewart’s 15 points and Alexa Gearheart’s 14.
Shelby Hall finished with nine points for 4-12 LCC. Cameron Kincer added eight points and Paige Caudill seven. Samantha Tubbs wound up with four points and Destiny Hall chipped in with two points.
