Lady Cougars win at home

In last week’s highly competitive eight-team, three-day Gateway Holiday Classic at Montgomery County High School in Mt. Sterling, the Letcher County Central High School Lady Cougars managed to win one of their three games. LCCHS lost its opening round game to Madison Central before beating Rowan County in the second round and then losing to North Laurel in the finale on Dec. 30.

The Lady Cougars, who are now 4-6 and have played their last nine games on the road, returned home last night, Jan. 4, to host district foe June Buchanan. The Lady Cougars won, 82-30.

Letcher Central will host the Jenkins Lady Cavaliers this Friday night before traveling to highly regarded Leslie County on Saturday night and to Pike County Central next Monday, Jan. 10.

The Lady Cougars’ early season struggles in both the Cumberland Falls Lady Redhounds Invitational and the Gateway Holiday Classic have resulted in LCCHS dropping to third in the region in the first weekly Dave Cantrall girls’ high school basketball poll that was released this past Monday.

The 14th Region’s top team is Perry County Central. The 7-1 Lady ‘Dores are ranked 24th in the first poll. Unranked Breathitt County has moved into the second spot in the region this week in front of LCCHS in third — a small step in front of Knott County Central and fifth-place Powell County.
