Lady Cougars win volleyball tourney

The Letcher County Central Lady Cougars volleyball team traveled to Somerset earlier this month to participate in the Pulaski County Invitational Tournament at Pulaski County High School.

Pool play began with the Lady Cougars playing the host team, the Pulaski County Lady Maroons. Letcher Central fell in three sets (25-22, 16-25, and 7-15).

The Lady Cougars started out sluggishly and could never really get on track although they won the first set. Some of the few bright spots in the first match were the serving of sophomores Sierra Dixon and Erica Meade, and the hitting and net play of seniors Brittany Sexton and Victoria Halcomb.

Later the same evening, Letcher Central played Whitley County in the second match of pool play. The Lady Cougars rebounded from their earlier loss to overcome the Lady Colonel 2-0 (25-17 and 25-9). In the first set, LCC was led by the hitting and net play of seniors Victoria Halcomb and Brittany Sexton and junior Myrika Begley. In the second set, Myrika, Victoria, and Brittany played well as did freshman Ari Nichols as she did a good job serving.

The loss put Letcher Central in the Silver Division in tournament play on the second day. In semifinal action, the Lady Cougars defeated Wayne County 2-0 (25-6 and 25-17). In the first set, LCC was led by the hitting of Myrika Begley and Victoria Halcomb and the serving of Sierra Dixon. In the second set, senior Sierra Dixon turned it on as she had several hard spikes to lead the Lady Cougars. Myrika Begley played well again, hitting the ball and using a lot of misdirection hits to confuse the Lady Cardinals. Ari Nichols did a good job serving and setting as did sophomore Janetta Dixon. Erica Meade turned in another good performance playing defense and digging in the backcourt.

In the championship game of the Silver Division, the Lady Cougars took on the Corbin Lady Redhounds. Letcher Central took home the Silver division trophy 2- 0 (25-15 and 25-14). In the first set Letcher Central was led by the hitting and blocking of Myrika Begley as she played excellently all day Saturday. Victoria Halcomb and junior Lisa Frazier did a good job hitting and spiking the ball. Sierra Dixon turned in another good performance serving the ball as did Ari Nichols. Erica Meade also played good backcourt defense. In the second set, Erica Meade, Myrika Begley, Victoria Halcomb, and Sierra Bates all hit the ball well and played good defense around the net. Sophomore Kristin Blair played well digging in the backcourt at the Libero position.

The Lady Cougars were scheduled to play Betsy Layne at LCCHS yesterday (Sept. 29) and will meet Belfry on Oct. 1 at 6:30 p.m.
