Larry Joe Gibson, 62, of Lafayette, Ind., died December 4 at Richard L. Roudebush Veterans Administration Hospital in Indianapolis, Ind.
Born in Whitesburg to the late Lloyd Alonzo Gibson and Faye Banks Burkhart, he was reared by his maternal grandparents, the late Harrison and Pairlee Banks. At the age of 13 he moved to Lafayette, Ind., and lived with his mother until he was 17 years old when he joined the U.S. Army.
Mr. Gibson entered active duty in the Army in 1972 and received an honorable discharge in 1975. He worked for Monon Railroad, L&N Railroad and CSX Railroad, then worked in construction and founded Gibson Roofing.
Surviving are his fiancée, Karen Louise Reese and their four-month-old daughter Eleanor Pairlee Gibson; two sons, Larry Joe Gibson II and wife Rebecca, and David Jehrome Gibson, all of Lafayette, Ind.; two brothers, Michael Gibson and wife Barbara of Lafayette, Ind., and Harrison Levi Bennett and wife Shirley of Attica, Ind.; a sister, Mabel Lynn Burkhart; two grandchildren, Ella Jean and Walter James Gibson; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, David Jehrome Bennett and Billy Ray Burkhart, and a sister, Debra Sue Burkhart.
