Lawmakers hear update on walking horse abuse

Kentucky lawmakers have decided to monitor allegations that Tennessee walking horses are being abused.

Lawmakers heard testimony this week about what’s being done to ensure that walking horses aren’t being intentionally harmed to create their trademark highstepping gait.

At issue is the illegal practice of irritating the forelegs and hooves of walking horses to cause them to lift their front feet higher and faster in competitions.

Republican state Sen. Damon Thayer of Georgetown says he’s not sure whether the problem is extenstive or limited in Kentucky.

Equine protection chief Keith Dane of the Humane Society of the United States says the problem is widespread in Kentucky and should be criminalized.
