Lawrence A. Baker dies at 72


Former Jenkins resident Lawrence A. Baker, 72, died March 3 at his home in Big Stone Gap, Va.

A son of the late Crockett and Delphia Anderson Baker, he was preceded in death by five sisters, Alpha Bartley, Evelena Johnson, Alice Baker, Alta Baker and Alma Baker, and three brothers, Roley Curtis Baker, Lee Baker and James Baker.

Mr. Baker attended Cedar Ridge Baptist Church. He was the former maintenance supervisor at the Elkhorn Country Club Golf Course at Jenkins. He enjoyed hunting, horses, farming, racing cars and watching NASCAR races. He was a lifetime member of the NRA.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Betty Kelly Baker; two daughters, Penelope Lane Baker Hays and husband Josh of Lawrenceburg, and Leslie Lynn Baker and husband Jeff Smith of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; grandchildren, Brookelyn Hays, Zoie Hays and MacKenzie Baker; great-granddaughter, Leighan Christine Baker; a sister, Edna Mae Baker of Hindman; three brothers, Josh Baker of Mims, Fla., Leonard Baker of Providence, R.I., and Sylvan Baker of Shepherdsville; and a special friend, Jack Chandler.

Funeral services were held March 5 in Pound, Va. Burial was in the Rob Ratliff Cemetery on Elkhorn Creek in Shelby Gap.
