The Letcher Central Cougars lost 68-48 at home last week to Cordia and 68-37 on the road Feb. 10 at 18-6 South Laurel to drop the Cougars’ record to 7-17.
The Cougars wrap up their season at home against 16-6 Perry Central tomorrow night, Feb. 15.
The third seed Letcher Central Cougars will host the 53rd District tournament next week and meet second seed Cordia in the opening round Feb. 20. Knott County Central, the top seed, will meet fourth seed June Buchanan in the other opening round game. The boys’ championship is scheduled for 7 p.m., Feb. 22.
The boys’ 14th Region tournament will be hosted by Perry County Central beginning the week of Feb. 26. The boys’ Sweet Sixteen begins at Rupp Arena on Mar. 21.
Letcher Central 48
The 14-11 Cordia Lions, in a district matchup that determined the second seed in next week’s 53rd District tournament, defeated the host Cougars 68-48.
The Lions were led in scoring by Kareem McDonald’s game-high 27 points. McDonald made five of 10 from behind the arc. Marquis Frazier chipped in with 14 points and Darryen Pringle added nine points.
Senior forward Elijah Raglin led the 7-17 Cougars with 19 points and eight rebounds. Greg Kincer finished with 13 points and Tyler Boggs wound up with nine points and eight rebounds. Tyler Stacy scored five points and Caleb Stidham finished with two points.
Both teams shot the basketball very well with the Cougars making 20 of 42 field goal attempts for 48 percent. The Lions converted 30 of 53 field goal attempts for 57 percent. The Lions narrowly won the rebounding battle 29-28.
