LCC boys win one, lose one

The Letcher County Central Cougars (8-6) will try to get back on the winning track tonight (Wednesday) when they host the Phelps Hornets (5-5) at Ermine at 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, the Cougars fell to Knott Central, 63 to 58, despite a well-balanced scoring attack led by 11 points from guard Caleb Stidham and 10 points apiece from Dakota Shepherd and Dylan Webb. The win improved Knott Central’s record on the season to 7-5.

Forward Trevor Hardin scored eight points for the Cougars and forward Greg Kincer and guard Parker Williams contributed six points. Ryan Lebrun had five points and Tyler Boggs finished with two points.

The loss to the Patriots came just one day after the Cougars ended a three-game losing skid — with all three losses coming on the road at Daytona Beach, Florida — with a 79 to32 win over the visiting Leslie County Eagles.

Tyler Boggs scored 14 points — 10 of them coming in the third quarter — and Dylan Webb added 13 to lead LCC to its eighth win of the season. Greg Kincer scored nine points and teammates Ryan Lebrun and Dakota Shepherd finished the game with eight points each.

Sophomore forward Joby Johnson took advantage of some extra playing time in the contest, scoring all seven of his points in the fourth quarter. Trevor Hardin and Isaac Lucas each scored five points and Caleb Stidham added four points. Matt Dicks and Manny Gibson each connected on a three-point field goal in the fourth quarter to round out the LCC scoring attack with three points apiece.

After tonight’s matchup with Phelps, the Cougars will be on the road for five straight games — at Powell County on Saturday afternoon at 2; at Buckhorn on January 15; at June Buchanan on January 17; at Knott Central on January 22, and at Leslie County on January 24.
