LCC girls squeeze in win



After returning from their Florida road trip on Dec. 31, the Letcher Central Lady Cougars were forced to cancel Harlan’s visit on Jan. 5 and their district game at Cordia on Jan. 8.

The Lady Cougars won easily 64-35 at district foe June Buchanan (2-7) on Jan. 10, to improve their record to 8-7 overall.

The Lady Cougars are unbeaten by either 53rd District or 14th Region foes so far this season. LCCHS is 2-0 in 53rd District action and 7-0 against 14th Region opponents.

The Lady Cougars host Central High School of Wise, Va. this evening, Jan. 17, and Knott County Central Jan. 19, before traveling to Perry County Central Jan. 25.

With three players scoring in double figures, the Lady Cougars took control early and then coasted to the easy 64-35 victory at JBS Jan. 10.

LCCHS was led by sophomore Mackenzie Craft’s game-high 18 points — including 4 of 8 from behind the arc.

Brooklynn Collins contributed 11 points and seven rebounds and Camryn Parks finished with 10 points. Emma Maggard just missed a double/double with nine points and 13 rebounds.

Loren Boggs and Brooke Bates scored four points each. Kaylee Banks, Jessica Boggs, Alyssa Franklin and Beth Holbrook scored two points each.

LCCHS made 23 of 57 field goal attempts for 40 percent. The Lady Cougars were 7 of 20 from behind the arc. LCCHS struggled at the charity line making just 13 of 25 attempts while claiming 43 rebounds.
