LCC girls take 2 of 3 contests




After losing to Jenkins 5-0, the Lady Cougars softball team bounced back with a 4-2 win at Harlan County Central the next day.

HCCHS got an early lead in the bottom of the first when Harlan’s Pennington started things off with a double and scored off a single by Carruba to take a 1-0 lead. The score stayed that way until the top of the fourth when Tekiah Caudill got on with a walk and moved to second with Micca Boggs’s single to right field. Next, Courtney Johnson reached first with an error, allowing Caudill to come in and tie the score. Shepherd hit a double and scored Boggs to give the Lady Cougars a 2-1 lead.

In the top of the sixth, the Lady Cougars got one more run with a double by Johnson and scored with a RBI single by Kayla Burton. In the bottom of the inning, Pennington got on with a single to right. When she tried to steal second, she was thrown out for the first time this season by Burton. Next, batter K. Day hit a single and was moved to second by a dropped ball in center field. She then scored on Johnson’s single to the gap in center and left field to cut the lead to 3-2.

Letcher Central got an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Wynn got on by an error by the left fielder. She was moved to second by a Caudill single and scored when Lisa Frazier hit the ball through the glove of the shortstop.

The Lady Cougars got the next three batters out to hold on to a 4- 2 win.

Thursday, LCCHS traveled to Hazard to play Clay County. Clay County started the scoring in the top of the fourth when Lewis hit a single and got to second when the outfield misplayed the ball. She moved to third on an infield error and scored on an overthrow.

The Lady Cougars answered back in the bottom of the inning when Amelia Shepherd doubled. Carlena Gose came in to run for her. The next batter, Kala Burton, got to first when she was struck by a pitch. Potter moved the runners with a bunt. Wynn singled to score Gose, but Burton was tagged trying to get to third. Tekiah Caudill doubled, scoring Annie Boggs, who was pinch running for Potter. Frazier singled in Wynn to give the Lady Cougars a 3-1 lead.

In the top of the fifth, the Clay County batter hit a single and scored when Mays’s single was misplayed in the outfield. Mays tried to get to third when the ball was thrown home, but Kayla Burton threw her out.

In the top of the sixth, Clay County’s Clem got on with a walk. She moved to second on a fielder’s choice. She came in to score on an infield error and an overthrow by the outfield to tie the game 3-3. In the bottom of the inning, Shepherd doubled and Gose came in to run. She scored on a Hailey Caudill single to take the lead 4-3.

In the top of the seventh, Smith started off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. She scored on a Mays’s fielder’s choice to tie the game 4-4. Letcher Central could not score and the game went into extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, disaster struck. With two out and the bases loaded, the Lady Cougars dropped an infield fly allowing a run to score. Then Clay County scored three more runs off two singles and got its last run by a dropped ball in the outfield.

With Clay County leading 9-4, Micca Boggs hit the ball over the left center fence to cut the lead to 9-5. Courtney Johnson hit a single, but the Lady Cougars could not move her and the game ended at 9-5.

Later in the evening, the Lady Cougars rebounded by beating the Hazard Lady Bulldogs 20-2. Wynn singled and moved to third on two passed balls.

Caudill scored Wynn off a single in left, Frazier singled and Micca Boggs walked to load the bases. Courtney Johnson doubled, scoring Caudill and Frazier. Shepherd and Burton walked and Katey Mynster singled to left, scoring Johnson and Shepherd. Wynn singled, then Caudill got on on a fielder’s choice when Mynster was forced out at third. Frazier knocked home Wynn to give the Lady Cougars an 8-0 lead. The Lady Bulldogs got one run in the bottom of the first.

Johnson started the second by getting on on an error and so did the next batter, Vanessa Dingus. Gose then walked to load the bases. Latisha Potter popped an out to the second baseman and Dingus was forced out at second. Mynster singled home Johnson and Wynn hit a double in left, scoring Gose. Caudill singled home Mynster from second, then Wynn scored from third on a passed ball to finish the scoring.

Leading 12-2 in the fourth,

Mynster started things off with a double to center and moved to third when a Wynn hit was missed play by the second baseman. Caudill got on base by a fielder’s choice. With the bases loaded, Boggs singled home Mynster. With two outs, Johnson hit a single to right, scoring Wynn and Caudill.

In the top of the fifth, Adiah Cook singled and Mynster got on first with an error, allowing Cook to score. Wynn got on on a fielder’s choice, and Frazier walked to load the bases. Micca Boggs tripled to center, scoring Mynster, Wynn and Frazier. Johnson singled home Boggs to give the LCCHS the 20-2 win.

The Lady Cougars finished the regular season with a record of 16-5.
