LCC girls take volleyball title




The Letcher County Central Lady Cougars won their fifth consecutive district title by defeating Jenkins 2-0 (25-6, 25-10) Oct. 13 at Cordia High School. Regional competition took place this week at Estill County.

In the district championship game, the Lady Cougars were led by the strong net play and hitting of Victoria Halcomb, Brittany Sexton, Sierra Bates, Erica Meade, Myrika Begley, and Lisa Frazier, the setting of Janetta Dixon and Ari Nichols, and the back line play of Kristen Blair and Sierra Dixon.

Halcomb, Bates, Frazier, and Janetta Dixon were named to the All District Team.

On Oct. 12, in the first match of the tournament, Jenkins defeated Knott County Central 2-1(21-25, 25-15, 25-23). In the second match, Letcher County Central defeated Cordia 2-0 (25-7, 25-10).

The Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association selected Victoria Halcomb of Letcher Central as 14th Region Player of the Year and Letcher Central Coach Dickie Adams as 14th Region Coach of the Year. This is the second coach of the year award for Adams this calendar year. He was named 14th Region Coach of the Year in basketball in the spring.
