The Letcher County Central Lady Cougars won two games and lost one over the past week to improve their season record to 14 wins and six losses. They have also won five of six 14th Region games.
The Lady Cougars’ latest was a 63 to 56 win over Central High School of Norton, Virginia on Monday night. (Game statistics weren’t available at press time.) The LCC girls also defeated visiting Madison Southern on Saturday, 74 to 58, but fell to visiting Knott County Central in overtime on Friday, 70 to 60.
Four Lady Cougars hit on more than half the shots they took against Madison Southern. Brook Bates, who scored on five of nine two-point attempts and four of eight shots from behind the threepoint line, led all LCC scorers with 25 points. Loren Bates scored 15 points after hitting four of seven two-pointers. Brooklyn Collins, who hit four of six two-pointers, scored a total of 12 points for the game, as did sophomore Kaylee Banks, who connected on four of six two-pointers. Courtney Hayes added eight points and Keira Couch scored two points.
For the game, the Lady Cougars shot 54.2 percent from the field and 75 percent from the freethrow line (18 of 24).
Loren Boggs led all LCC scorers in the overtime loss to Knott County Central with 17 points. Brooklyn Collins scored 13 points and sophomore Kaylee Banks added 11. Keira Couch and Brooke Bates each scored eight points, Courtney Hayes had two points, and freshman Kaylee Banks scored one point.
The Lady Cougars are scheduled to host Perry County Central Thursday at 7:30 p.m., and then travel to June Buchanan for a 6 p.m. game on Friday. On Saturday, the Lady Cougars are scheduled to play Martin County at 4 p.m. in the Lady Hawk 1-day Showcase at Pike County Central.
