The Letcher County Central High School boys’ basketball team will host Leslie County (Friday) and Knott Central (Saturday) as they resume regular season play after spending a few days at a tournament in Daytona Beach, Florida.
The Cougars’ record stood at seven wins and three losses after falling to fellow Kentuckians Breckinridge County, 66 to 45, in the Sunshine Classic on December 27. That loss came after wins at Cordia and at home against Thomas Nelson.
In the 52 to 49 win at Cordia, Gregory Kincer, who scored 20 points and pulled down five rebounds, led the Cougars. Caleb Stidham added 13 points to the LCC tally, while Tyler Boggs and Parker Williams each scored six points. Kenton Combs scored three points and Trevor Hardin and Dylan Webb added two points apiece to round out the scoring for the Cougars, who went on a 16 to 8 run in the third quarter to erase a 28 to 23 halftime lead by Cordia.
Tyler Boggs scored 22 points and hauled in nine rebounds while Gregory Kincer scored 17 points and collected 10 rebounds to lift the Cougars to a 67 to 59 win over Thomas Nelson High School on December 21.
Whitesburg native Chris Tolliver coaches Thomas Nelson, located near Bardstown in Nelson County. Tolliver and LCC coach Winston Lee were teammates in 2002 when they helped lead the Whitesburg High School Yellowjackets to what would become that school’s final appearance in the Sweet Sixteen.
