Learn arts and crafts

If you are looking for something fun and exciting to do after all those long, cold winter days, you might enjoy attending the arts and crafts workshops on April 18 and 19, at the Letcher County Extension Office in Whitesburg. You can learn how to weave a basket, do stained glass or paint a pretty gourd. The teachers are very talented folks who really enjoy sharing their know-how with others.

In the gourd painting class you may choose to make a perky bunny with floppy ears that lights up, a cute chicken, which serves as a candy dish or a lamb that can be an Easter basket. Examples of these are on display at the Extension Office. They are $35 each, which includes all supplies. Our Instructor is Laura Robinson from Maysville.

The stained glass class will offer you the opportunity to make several pretty pieces to decorate your home or give as gifts. It will be taught by Roxie Fields from Hendersonville, N.C. — originally from Letcher County. She has four choices for you: a “diamond in a square”, “dogwood blossom”, “maple leaf ” or “apple”, with each being $25.

Our own Letcher County basket teacher, Frances Whitaker, will be teaching an egg basket class and a “bean pot” basket, which has a swing handle. The 10-inch egg basket will be $30 and the “bean pot” will be $25.

If you want to attend any of the classes, you need to call the Letcher County Extension Office at 633-2362, by April 11 to get your name on the list, so the teachers know the amount of supplies they will need to bring.
