Letcher Area Homemakers meet for lunch in Hazard

It was a little cool when I wrote this on Sunday evening, and some scattered frost was predicted. Hopefully it won’t be cold enough to damage folks’ garden plants or flowers.

Belated birthday wishes to Evangene Adams and Mary Jo Blair, both of Blair Branch, who had birthdays last week. Also, Owen Amburgey celebrated a birthday.

The Letcher Area Homemakers had their May meeting at Ponderosa Restaurant in Hazard. We had a good turnout and had Nancy Walls and Bonita Adams joining us for lunch. All enjoyed a good lunch and being together. We also saw Ila and Tammy Adams, Alma Rose Blair, Reva and Vera Adams there having lunch together.

Wilma Pridemore said her granddaughter, Holly Madden, came by Lee and Wilma’s home before heading to the prom, and Wilma said she was very pretty in her dress.

Traci, Holly and Hannah Madden had recently been shopping in Lexington for prom and eighth-grade dance dresses for the girls. Traci’s niece, Chrystal, went with them to help out.

Dorse and Gwen Fields were happy to have Cheryl, Eddie, Hayden and Todd visiting with them for Mother’s Day. Due to all the rain, they spent the weekend playing cards and grilled out on the porch.

Their granddaughter, Michele, was not able to be there due to being on a month-long college trip to Italy and Greece.

Dorse and Gwen were excited to see a large elk near the old barn above their house. They called other neighbors who also came to see the elk before it ran off and got into Dorse’s electric fence, tearing a large section down.

We hope that Ardelia Brown wasn’t hurt too badly after falling at her mother, Della Blair’s, home.

Last week Don, Coreen, K.P. Pridemore and I all picked up Jessie Banks at London while we were heading to Somerset. We went looking for antiques and good junk, and stopped in to visit Vince, Juanita and Freddy McCarey while in Somerset.

Gillis Reedy has been suffering with gout in his feet. He wasn’t able to attend church on Sunday due to the pain when he walks.

Ivan and Freda Adams recently spent a couple of weeks visiting family in Florida. We’re glad they’re home and hope they had a good time.

Our sympathies to the families of Garvin Chadwell, Venson Whitaker, and James Breeding, who were all called away by death last week. May God be with their loved ones during this sorrowful time.

Last week Lance and Edith Breeding attended their grandson’s graduation at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond.

This Friday evening and Saturday will be the Dee and Ethel Smith family reunion. Friday is the soup bean supper at the head of Drew Branch above the old homeplace, and Saturday it will be held at the Stuart Robinson Dining Hall.

The American Legion will be at these local cemeteries: the Shade Adams cemetery at 10:55 a.m.; the Fred Adams cemetery at Isom at 11:05; the I.D. Adams cemetery on Blair Branch at 11:20; Horse Mill Point cemetery at 11:30; Whitaker cemetery at Letcher 12:30; Burton Hill cemetery at Letcher at 12:45; and the Coy Fields cemetery at Pratt Branch at 12:55.

The other listings can be found in last week’s Eagle. If you have loved ones buried in these cemeteries, it is nice to come and show your support and appreciation to the veterans who take the time to shoot at the graveyards.
