Letcher County’s two high school football teams hope to even their won-loss records this week after suffering losses in opening night action last week.
After falling on the road August 17 to Knox Central, 49 to 22, the Letcher County Central Cougars hope to rebound with a win at home this Friday against the Bell County Bobcats. The Bobcats started their season last week with a 54-0 win of county rival Middlesboro High School.
Meanwhile, the Jenkins High School Cavaliers will be back on their home field this Friday in hopes of erasing the memory of their 46 to 7 opening loss to visiting Shelby Valley High School. Visiting Jenkins this week is Twin Valley High School from Pilgrims Knob, Virginia.
Letcher Central scored its three touchdowns against Knox Central on two runs by quarterback Nick Sergent and on a run and successful two-point conversion attempt by Jonathan Sergent, who led the Cougar offense with 116 yards gained on 20 attempts. Hunter Campbell rushed for 42 yards on 10 attempts.
In the passing department, Nick Sergent completed four of 11 attempts for a total of 64 yards. Sergent’s passes were caught by Jordan Adams for 14 yards, Kalin Branham for 35 yards, Jonathan Sergent for 10 yards, and Thomas Whitaker for five yards.
Defensively, the Cougars held Knox Central to 96 yards on the ground, but gave up 241 yards through the air.
Zach Hensley led Letcher Central in tackles with seven total tackles, followed by Jayson Buttrey’s six total tackles. Eli Matthews and Jonathan Sergent each had four total tackles, while Jepatha Griffith and Sam Mullins each had three. Two total tackles were credited to Jordan Adams and Joseph Fisher. Kaden Barnette, Kalin Branham, David Hager, Hayden King, Leyton Polly, and Nick Sergent were each credited with one tackle.
Barnette, Buttrey, and Mullins each had a tackle that resulted in a loss of yardage for Knox Central. Buttrey and Mullins also had quarterback sacks. Jordan Adams had Letcher Central’s only fumble recovery.
Thirty-three Letcher Central players saw action in the game.
