Fifth grade students from across Letcher County had the opportunity to learn about alligators and stingrays during a visit from the outreach staff of the Newport Aquarium.

The Wave Foundation of the Aquarium brought the Stingray Cart with two baby stingrays and a baby alligator to Whitesburg Middle School for viewing by all fifth grade students in the county to observe, touch and interact with while learning about how they survive in their natural habitat.

Since many students might not have the opportunity to visit an aquarium, this program provides a unique educational experience to students to increase their awareness, curiosity and respect of aquatic animals and their environments right in their own community. The October 25 program was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Whitesburg, Kiwanis Club of Jenkins, and the Letcher County Educational Foundation.
