Letcher men face gun charges

Charges against two Letcher County men were enhanced after Kentucky State Police determined they were convicted felons in possession of stolen guns.

Henry “Axle” Bentley III, 23, of Jenkins, and Patrick E. Childers, 33, of Jackhorn each has been charged with possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, receiving stolen property valued at more than $300, and being a persistent felony offender in the second-degree.

Each of the two men was arrested at his home earlier this month after arrest warrants were obtained by Trooper Adam Hall.

According to a criminal complaint filed by Hall, Bentley and Childers “while being convicted felon(s) knowingly and unlawfully possessed a Ruger stainless steel .44-caliber handgun and a Belgium automatic .12- gauge shotgun. (Bentley and Childers) had in (their) possession the above firearms and mining lights and battery valued at $300 or more, which (they) knew or should have known to be stolen.”

Hall’s complaint said the crimes took place “all within five years of final discharge of felony convictions” against both men.

The charges have been referred to the Letcher County Grand Jury. Bond for Bentley and Childers was set at $10,000 cash.
