A legislative redistricting plan being pushed by Democratic leaders in the House would change Letcher County from being parts of two House districts to just one shared with a portion of Pike County.
The plan would move all of Letcher County into the 94th District, which is now represented by Democrat Leslie Combs of Pike County. The 92nd District, which currently include part of Letcher County and is now represented by Democrat John Short of Knott County, would be comprised of Knott, Magoffin and Breathitt counties.
The House State Government Committee on Tuesday approved the plan, which passed along party lines. All Republicans voted no.
It remains to be seen whether the Republicancontrolled Senate will approve the House plan.
The Senate has opted to wait until next year to deal with its own redistricting plan, and moving ahead with the Democratled House’s version this year would remove a political bargaining chip. Each chamber traditionally approves the other’s plan without changes. (AP)
