Library book borrowers will soon be able to check out e-book readers from the Harry M. Caudill Memorial Library in Whitesburg.
The board of trustees of the Letcher County Public Library District has approved the purchase of three Amazon Kindle eReaders.
“We cannot be left behind with technology,” said Angelina Tidal, director of the Letcher County Public Library District.
Tidal said the devices, which cost $80 each, are to help get patrons to the technology age, for them to experience Wi-Fi and for sheer convenience.
Twenty- five popular books have been downloaded to the devices. As people request more selections, additional titles will be added to the e-book readers, Tidal said.
Three board of trustee members are testing the ebook readers and the public will be able to check out the devices beginning in July at the Whitesburg library.
After signing an agreement and making a $10 deposit, patrons will be allowed to borrow a Kindle for a three-week period. A borrower will also take instructions and the charger with them.
“If they break it, they will have to pay for it,” said Tidal.
Tidal said if the Kindles become a popular item to check out, more may be purchased for the other libraries in Letcher County.
