Light vote expected

Letcher County and no one came out to vote?

That won’t be the case literally next Tuesday. But it might be the case figuratively if voters here pay as little attention to the candidates for statewide offices as the candidates have paid to them.

Of the 31 candidates whose names will appear on the ballot in the May 22 primary, less than a handful have made what anyone could term a serious effort at campaigning in Letcher County. Add that to a lack of interest by the local party organizations and you have a recipe for a turnout even smaller than the 2003 primary, when only 12 percent of Democrats and 18 percent of Republicans bothered to go to the polls.

Polls are scheduled to open next Tuesday at 6 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. Races for the nomination of six statewide offices will be on the ballot. Those offices and the names of the candidates seeking them are:

For Governor and Lieutenant Governor (Republican) – Billy Harper and Dick Wilson; Anne Northup and Jeff Hoover; Ernie Fletcher and Robbie Rudolph.

For Governor and Lieutenant Governor (Democrat) – William Bruce Lunsford and Gregory Damron Stumbo; Jonathan Miller and Irv Maze (withdrawn from race); Jody Richards and John Y. Brown III; Steven L. Beshear and Daniel Mongiardo; Gatewood Galbraith and Mark Wireman; Stephen L. Henry and Renee T. True; Otis “Bullman” Hensley and Richard Robbins.

For Attorney General (Republican) – Tim Coleman; Phillip C. Kimball; Jon Larson; Stan Lee.

For Attorney General (Democrat) – Robert V. Bullock; Jack Conway.

For Secretary of State (Democrat) – Dick Robinson; MaDonna J. White; S. Bruce Hendrickson.

For State Treasurer (Republican) – Lonnie Napier; Brandon D. Smith; Ken Upchurch; Melinda L. Wheeler.

For State Treasurer (Democrat) – Patrick R. Dunmire; L.J. “Todd” Hollenbach; Mike Weaver; Jack D. Wood.

For Commissioner of Agriculture (Republican) – Richie Farmer; Don Stosberg.

For Commissioner of Agriculture (Democrat) – David Neville; David Lynn Williams.
