LIHEAP Crisis program helps in heating crisis

The LKLP Community Action Council is operating the Crisis portion of the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) that assists households in a heating crisis. The cold winter weather combined with rising utility costs leaves many households unable to meet heating bills or purchase sufficient bulk fuel. Last year more than 5,500 residents of Leslie, Knott, Letcher and Perry counties received financial assistance and emergency services from the LIHEAP Crisis component.

A household is in a heating crisis situation when it meets the basic LIHEAP eligibility criteria and is within four days of running out of bulk fuel; has received a past due or disconnect notice if natural gas or electricity is the heat source; or the heating costs are included in rent and the household has received an eviction notice.

Applications for assistance are available at 2 Main St., Whitesburg, (606) 633- 4458.
