GROUNDBREAKING – A groundbreaking ceremony for the Mountain Water District- Jenkins Connector Water Project was held August 1 near the Pike County/Letcher County line. Approximately 8,000 feet of 8-inch water main and a booster pumping station will be installed in the Shelby Gap area of Pike County, and will extend to the Letcher County line. The City of Jenkins and Letcher and Pike Fiscal Courts are working together on the project to provide water service to approximately 25 homes in the Shelby Gap area, as well as connect both counties’ water systems. This will allow water to be provided between counties in emergency situations. Attending the ceremony were State Rep. Leslie Combs, Pike Co. Judge/Executive Wayne T. Rutherford, Letcher Co. Judge/Executive Jim Ward, Jenkins Mayor D. Charles Dixon, Letcher Co. Magistrate Wayne Fleming, Pike Co. Magistrate Vernon “Chick” Johnson, Jenkins Council member Terry Braddock, Mountain Water District Board Chairperson Toni Akers, Mountain Water District Vice Chairperson Terry Spears, Mountain Water District Secretary John Collins, Mountain Water District Manager Will Brown, and Kentucky River Area Development District officials Paul Hall and Benny Hamilton.
