Linuel Edgar Sumpter dies at 83



Linuel Edgar Sumpter, 83, of Ovenfork, died July 8 at Pikeville Medical Center.

A son of the late David Wade and Winnie Marie Maggard Sumpter, he was the grandfather of the late David Travis McDaniels and Angela Gail Sumpter.

He was a brother of the late Edward Sumpter, David Wade Sumpter, Opal Estep, Geraldine Terry and Kathleen Sumpter.

He had worked for the Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company, and was a member of the McRoberts Old Regular Baptist Church, the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Surviving are his wife, Marilyn Shelton Sumpter; three sons, Ronald Lynn Sumpter and wife Ruby Gail, Gregory Neil Sumpter and wife Sharon, and Larry Ivan Sumpter and wife Margie, all of Ovenfork; a daughter, Kimberly G. Maggard and husband Ronnie of Partridge; two sisters, Nila Hatfield and Christine Burke, both of Lexington; 11 grandchildren, Amy Sexton and husband Donnie, Lore Murphy and husband Jeremy, Damon Levi Sumpter and wife Diane, Brian Sumpter and wife Kathleen, Colter Sumpter and wife Ashley, Jason Sumpter and wife Makeisha, Megan Johnson and husband Nathan, Zach Sumpter and wife Liz, Bethany Sumpter, April Herald and husband Jamie, and Adam Maggard and wife Amber; and 10 greatgrandchildren, Christopher Sturgill, Caleb Sexton, Kristen Sexton, Luke Murphy, Noah Murphy, Arbana Sumpter, Cayden Sumpter, Ella Sumpter, Kyleigh Herald and Will Herald.

Funeral services were held July 10 at Letcher Funeral Home in Whitesburg. Burial was in Sumpter family cemetery at Ovenfork.
