Local hospital earns praise

Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital received a grade of B in patient safety from a national healthcare reporting nonprofit, on a par with or ahead of most other hospitals in the region.

The hospital grades are given by The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to improve patient outcomes by giving patients the ability to see what they can expect from each hospital. There are 37 hospitals within 100 miles of the Whitesburg zip code.

Meanwhile, Whitesburg ARH Home Health was also recognized this week as a Top Agency by HomeCare Elite, an annual compilation of the most successful home care providers in the United States.

That report comes from ABILITY Network and DecisionHealth and is based on quality outcome and process measures, decided by the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

Three other ARH Home Health agencies were named as Top Agencies, a recognition of the top 25 percent of home health agencies in the country.

ARH Mary Breckinridge Home Health Services is a Top Agency for the fourth year and a Top 500 Agency for the first year; Middlesboro ARH Home Health Agency is a Top Agency for the fifth year and a Top 500 Agency for the second year; and Morgan County ARH Home Health Agency as a Top Agency for the fifth year.

This is the first year that Whitesburg ARH Home Health Agency has been named a Top Agency.

In the Leapfrog survey, five of 37 hospitals within 100 miles of Whitesburg received an “A” rating. Those were Clark Regional Medical Center in Winchester, Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands, Va., Morristown Hamblin Healthcare System in Morristown, Tenn., Norton Community Hospital in Norton, Va., and Wythe County Community Hospital in Wytheville, Va.

Nine hospitals scored “B” ratings. Hospitals at that level are: Franklin Woods Community Hospital in Johnson City, Tenn., Jellico Community Hospital in Jellico, Tenn., Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Va., LeConte Medical Center in Sevierville, Tenn., Logan Regional Medical Center in Logan, W.Va., Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap, Va., Mountain View Regional Hospital in Norton, Va., St. Joseph – London in London, Ky., and Whitesburg ARH.

The remaining 23 hospitals in the region scored a C or D. No hospital in the region received an F.

The ratings consider patient infections, problems with surgery, practices to prevent errors, safety problems and doctors, nurses and hospital staff.
