Gurnie Phil Maggard, 79, died September 8 at the Greg and Noreen Wells Hospice Center in Hazard.
Born in Isom, he was a son of the late Charlie B. and Berta Collins Maggard. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Larry Dwight Maggard, Jim Maggard and Jack Frazier, and a sister, Bobbie Jean F. Collins.
Mr. Maggard taught school for 32 years and drove a school bus for 41 years. He was a member of the National Education Association, Kentucky Education Association, Board of Directors of Letcher County Teachers Credit Union, and the Little Colley Baptist Church.
He and his wife operated Maggard’s Store for 45 years.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Anna Lee Adams Maggard; a son, Larry Maggard and wife Shannon of Isom; a daughter, Maronda Gibson and husband Ricky of Horse Cave; and five grandchildren, William Kelly Gibson and Hanna, Kaycee Gibson and Kyle, Kandace Gibson, Charlie Maggard and Emma Grace Maggard.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, September 11) at Little Colley Baptist Church in Isom. Burial will be in the Maggard Cemetery in Isom.
