Eastern Kentucky’s homegrown music and arts festival, M.A.R.S. Fest, will take place Friday and Saturday, July 18 and 19, on super scenic Pine Mountain in Letcher County.
M.A.R.S. Fest began in 2008 on Pine Mountain at Wiley’s Last Resort as a showcase for local and regional musicians, artists, writers, and folks who care about the preservation, perpetuation and promotion of Appalachian music, art, culture and life. This year’s diverse lineup will include Knoxville Americana singer/ songwriter Jay Clark & the Tennessee Tree Beavers, Tug Valle Troubadour Glen Simpson with Glenn Dillon, Virginia dysfunctional hillbilly folk rockers Foddershock, Kentucky honkytonk rockabilly masters Giant Rooster Sideshow, Pike County’s hard rockin’ Neal Spears and Unit 31.
Also performing will be Letcher County’s singing coal miner Gene “Blue Boy” Ballou, Elkhorn City’s own kayakin’ guitar slinger Steve “Don’t Call Me Babe” Ruth, up and coming regional mellow rock faves Wayne Graham, from Georgia former Payroll Boy and Hemphill native Sonny Houston with Larry Germain, Louisville and WMMT avant gardish singer/songwriter Parker Hobson, traditional young old-time banjo plucker Kevin Howard, Lawrence County’s dynamic traditionally flavored rock and rollers Luna and the Mountain Jets with the guitar wizard Dave Prince, and southwest Virginia’s soulful Craig Street Ramblers fresh from their outstanding recording sessions in New York City. And of course, Open Mike and the ever popular Minnie More. All in all, a great assemblage of mountain musicians of all stripes.
