Makala Stambaugh selected for Governor’s Scholar Class of 2020

MAKALA STAMBAUGH

Makala Stambaugh, junior at Jenkins Middle High School and daughter of Melinda and Victor Jones of Jenkins and the late Warren Stambaugh, was recently selected as a 2020 Governor’s Scholar.

The Governor’s Scholars Program is a summer residential program for outstanding high school students in Kentucky who are rising seniors. The program originated in 1983 as a result of Kentucky leaders’ concerns that the state’s “best and brightest” were leaving the commonwealth to pursue educational and career opportunities elsewhere without fully understanding the potential of their talents at home.

The program’s mission is to enhance Kentucky’s next generation of civic and economic leaders.

The students will spend five weeks on a college campus, with the curriculum including a focus area, a general studies component, and a seminar group. Faculty and staff will also invite a variety of speakers and performers from a wide range of disciplines and pursuits to visit campus. Field trips, special events, and a film series also contribute to the atmosphere in which scholars are challenged to not only examine, but more importantly, to nurture their sense of learning and leadership.
