Man charged after trying to invade home at Cowan

A Redfox man, who police say is connected to recent church burglaries, was arrested by the Letcher County Sheriff’s Department this week after an attempted burglary on Cowan.

Michael W. Slone, 31, was charged with second-degree burglary on March 9 after the sheriff’s

was called about an attempted robbery at the Cowan residence of Cassie Gibson.

Deputy Sheriff Brian Damron said a caller reported that a man wearing a blue shirt and hat was at tempting to get through the back door of Gibson’s residence by removing a piece of wood that was nailed over the door.

“Ms. Gibson stated that she yelled at the man who was attempting to gain access to the residence and he fled on foot. Ms. Gibson then contacted a neighbor and they came to the residence and took Ms. Gibson with them,” said Damron.

The caller also reported that a white four-door car was circling the area. Police were notified of the license plate number and were able to stop the vehicle.

Damron said the two women inside the vehicle said they had dropped Slone off and were on their way to pick him back up.

Damron and Kentucky State Police Trooper Randy Surber found Slone at a residence near a church at Kingscreek.

“He stated that he was attempting to gain access to support a drug habbit that he had,” said Damron.

Damron said Slone told him that he knew the resident and knew that Gibson was alone.

Letcher County Sheriff ‘s Deputies Mike Dingus and Jason Bates also helped in the case.

The case is still under investigation by Damron. The names of further suspects in the case will be presented to the Letcher County Grand Jury.
